Nostalgia: Classic Albums and Live Tours

Had Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright not passed away recently, I would start this list with the words “First-Born Child” but since resurrection is unlikely, following is the per-ticket price I would pay to see these original band-lineups* play the following classic albums live.

$1,500: ABBA : Super Trouper (1980)
$1,000 : Guns N’ Roses : Appetite For Destruction (1987)
$1,000: Journey : Escape (1981)
$1,000: Styx : Paradise Theater (1981)
$800 : Jellyfish : Bellybutton (1990)
$500: Heart Throbs : Jubilee Twist (1992)
$250: The Beautiful South : Welcome To… (1989)
$250 : Culture Club : Colour by Numbers (1983)
$250 : Saigon Kick : The Lizard (1992)
$250 : Skid Row : (eponymous) (1989)
$150 : Sisters of Mercy : Floodland (1987)

What amount would you pay to see an artist*, and playing which classic album?

* Presume original band members still alive

Peter Gabriel and Time Machine Concerts

So… (ahem)… Peter Gabriel is planning a U.S. tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of his iconic 1986 album “So” (featuring mega-hits “Red Rain”, “Don’t Give Up”, “In Your Eyes”, etc.). Gabriel is the next artist joining the popular trend of playing entire classic albums start-to-finish.

Isn’t this kind of a weird concept? It is clearly designed to exploit fans’ nostalgia, yet it becomes a 100% fabricated experience: Back in the day, artists NEVER played an entire album, let alone in tracking order!

I have already attended several of these faux-Time Machine experiences, by throwback artists including The Church, Gary Numan and The Damned. I’m not hatin’ here, just observation’ here.

What do you make of this trend? Have you seen any such concerts? Are there any Classic Albums you would pay top-dollar to see the original artist perform?

Bryan Fuller, Marilyn Munster and Hannibal Lector?!

Friends know I am passionate about Hollywood Reboots. Contrary to what some think, though, I don’t despise them. Gary Numan once sang, “We all live in the same museum, we all rearrange the same old song.” One of my favorite TV creators is Bryan Fuller (Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me). @BryanFullerOnline is not only rebooting The Munsters property, he is currently re-imagining the Hannibal Lector/Will Graham relationship (i.e. his “Hannibal” TV show ostensibly will be a prequel to “Manhunter”, whose events took place prior to those in “Silence of the Lambs”).

Discussing his upcoming “Mockingbird Lane”, Bryan said something funny and insightful to EW: “I’m personally, as an audience member, not afraid of remakes. I’m afraid of bad remakes, which is unfortunately more commonly the case. Which is why I think people get up in arms when they see a remake idea — “Oh, they’re remaking something that’s been done before, what hackery, there’s no original thoughts in Hollywood.” But there’s a great quote that no art exists without the art before it.”

The fact is, Bryan could reboot my 6th Grade Talent Show and I’d watch it (and then buy the Blu-Ray special edition box set). Are you down to watch “Mockingbird Lane” and/or “Hannibal” with me? Both shows are still in development – neither has received an air date – but what do you say we start hyping them now? Talk to your friends about them. Let’s raise awareness and support our talented friends and family. <3

Hake’s Americana recently published their Auction #206 Preview on Facebook… and… HOLY CRAP! There is a major discovery! With absolutely no fanfare, Hake’s Americana are auctioning a Kresge-carded Aquaman that I have NEVER SEEN. I strongly believed it to exist, but having never seen one - or met anyone who had – I was unable to definitively include this packaging variation. In my book, I discuss this packaging variation (see page 62) as follows: “Perhaps the most exciting revelation about Kresge’s character-specific code is that it suggests the possibility of at least one other 1st Issue Kresge Aquaman figure.” Hake’s is about to sell an example of this VERY variation (pictured above). I call it the “Kresge Reorder” card, and Mego issued it in Winter of ‘73. For more information, check out my book, as I discuss it at greater length therein. I am positively tingling with excitement.

One passionate fan’s concern about the upcoming “Dark Knight Rises” movie. “Nolan’s iteration has a cartoonish gravitas… the same pallor that marred Tim Burton’s heavily flawed BATMAN RETURNS.”
